Prepping for the divorce
Ok the magic is over and she is going to demand the divorce
word. Now if you'd only know ahead of time so you could
stash some money and have some seperate credit accounts
established.
First thing you should do (even if you are happy now), put
a set percentage of your paycheck in a separate bank account.
(On-line banks are out that do not mail statements, but
rather by e-mail.). So you'll need to have some sort
of e-mail account to house your statements (I use my work
e-mail account). I have a ING savings account that takes
out a set amount each week (obvoiusly her name is not on the
account). Find a couple of low rate credit cards and apply
for them wtih an alternate address. I was able to use my work
address. Use your cellphone number for the home phone information
(if you don't have a cell phone then you should get one.)
I would suggest having the cards just for a emergency sistuation..
(HOwever you should at least use them once per year just
to keep them active.. charge a tank of gas, and then pay it
off on the statement.) Now be sure that she has a car to get
around in (you wouldn't want her to take your car...
most states devide 2 cars as whichever spouse drive most...
thus if she drives the town car and you drive the truck, you
are going to have the truck.) YOu may even want to keep some
cash stashed (maybe at your work or somewhere where your
spouse does not know about). If you do anything at all be
sure to have some cash to put yourself up in a hotel for a few
weeks (you wouldn't want to have to sleep in the truck
during the winter. (At least find something that has a shower...
camp grounds are good for this... find a public campground
and use the shower there if you have too.)
I would suggest also having enough money for the lawyer
too... most of them like to be paid up front these days.
Now if you are up to your eye balls in debt, I'd suggest
that you and your spouse file bankruptcy when splitting,
that will wipe out most everything, and the house will definately
go to whoever wants to make the payment...
