10 Rules for Safe Dating
1) Set up the encounter in a public place. I have met in many
kinds of places including a Walmart parking lot, the mall
food court, an amusement park near a specific ride, public
parks, etc. The key is for it to be a public place, but where
there is a little more noise or a lot more space so that you
can talk discreetly without drawing attention. From there,
if things work out, you can go to a more private setting.
2) Be HONEST. Be honest about your expectations. When you
meet for the first time there may still be some uneasiness
about what exactly will happen. Let your meeting partner
know exactly what you expect and what to expect from you.
The worst scenario is that one person might expect a sexual
encounter right off the bat, but the other person may want
to go out and have fun first to make sure they get to know you
well and are truly interested. In either case be honest
and let the other person know. If there is no agreement,
walk away. Also, be honest about your looks. Don't
tell someone you are 6'0" and 180 lbs if you are
really 5'6" and 200 lbs. Some people are concerned
about looks. That is their right. most people, though,
are very understanding and accepting. Just don't
surprise them.
3) Always take along protection. Men, have a condom handy.
Women, you too, you never know if he may have "forgotten"
to bring one. Discuss the topic of safe sex BEFORE leaving
the public venue. This way, if you are not both in agreement,
it ends there without embarrassment.
4) Always have a back-up plan. In case things go sour, always
have a planned exit. I always recommend going in your own
car.
5) Never let someone else drive your car.
6) Always insist on two keys to the hotel room if you go to
one.
7) Never go to a private residence on the first date.
8) Use nicknames until you feel comfortable giving out
your real name.
9) Try to have a cell phone handy just in case.
10) If there is any doubt in your mind as to whether you want
to go through with the date, walk away. Don't go into
any date with any doubts.
